Good writing allows readers to absorb the content of a text without being distracted, struggling to make sense of sentences, or getting lost. Unfortunately, many scientific texts are hard to read and unnecessarily hard to understand. AI’s like DeepL have learned that the academic writing style is long, convoluted, and complex, reflecting the poor quality of the majority of scientific texts. Good writing gives researchers an advantage because it keeps the reader’s attention on their work, rather than moving on to one of the myriad alternative works out there. Even when using AI and other tools to improve their writing, researchers benefit from learning to write well because they know what to look for in the end result.
Writers need to know how to write in such a way that the words disappear and the reader is immersed in the content. While writing requires practice, the skills to achieve this are based on techniques that can be learned to accelerate ones progress.
Learning Objectives
In this workshop, participants will learn storytelling techniques to make their writing more structured, understandable, and engaging, thereby increasing their chances of making valuable connections, getting published, and gaining recognition.
Execution
The workshop will alternate between slides and hands-on exercises, with time for questions and discussion. Participants will incrementally edit pre-selected texts that communicate their own research and exercise their writing.
